Chang's Frito Cakes Recipe | Orange Is the New Black

11:26 PM

If you're an Orange Is the New Black fan, you have most likely been in a binge-watching coma much like myself. I really wish that I had the control to spread out the episodes to last me a wee bit longer than 48 hours. But, I don't have that sort of patience, and I'm glad that I'm not alone.

While watching Season 3: Episode 6 "Ching Chong Chang," I decided to take a short break to try to replicate Chang's Frito Cakes. I ran to the cafeteria (Publix) to grab a can of peas and a bag of Fritos, and about 30 minutes later, I was enjoying these strangely delicious cakes. If you're a fan of Orange Is the New Black, or if you just like to try new recipes, you absolutely HAVE to try them!

Ingredients:
1 9.75oz bag of Fritos Original Corn Chips
1 15oz can of Del Monte No Salt Added Sweet Peas
1 cup water
Hot sauce (optional)

Directions:

Create a small hole in the Fritos bag with a knife.

Next, place the bag of Fritos on a towel on the floor and cover.

(Behind the scenes: I had to include this picture of my black lab, Shelby. I imagine that she's thinking, "Mom, what the hell is going on here?!")

Now, the fun part! Stomp on the wrapped bag of Fritos for a few minutes. Though you cannot see, I was smiling for the entirety of this step. My boyfriend took a photo of me so you can see just how happy I am!  I wore my Kale shirt for my girl, Yoga Jones. (Sorry I had to blur the background -- our dining room table is an ABSOLUTE MESS!)

Once you are done stomping to your hearts content, add the cup of water to the Fritos bag. Mash the bag with your hands until you feel that the water and Fritos are well incorporated. When completed, empty the contents of the bag into a large mixing bowl.

Drain the can of peas, and add to the mashed Fritos in the mixing bowl. To ensure that the peas are well incorporated, mix with a spoon or with your hands.

Next, take a palm-sized amount of the mixture, and shape into a little cake.

Next, grab a frying pan, and add enough Canola oil to cover. Turn a burner to medium heat, and allow the oil come to temperature. Carefully drop the cakes into the pan. Fry the cakes for 2-3 minutes, turn them, and repeat.

Remove the cakes from the pan, and set aside to cool for 5 minutes. Plate and decorate.

Frito Cakes are best enjoyed with hot sauce and outdoors, or at least, that's how Chang preferred to enjoy them. Bon appétit!

    1. Thanks, Sam! The shirt is surprisingly from Whole Foods. You should make them. The recipe is really simple, and they're so good. It's all about presentation. 🙌
